These images date back to more than thirty years ago, well before 9/11. They were taken primarily along the Willamette and Columbia Rivers in industrial yards that, for the most part, no longer exist. I would always show up unannounced and introduce myself to whatever authority or yard boss was on duty that particular evening.
This is something that is unimaginable in today’s post 9/11 climate. Oftentimes, I would be extended the courtesy of a truck and driver to escort me about the facility to find the best vantages. Nothing was ever asked in return. No money was paid or favors of a print requested. Eventually they comprised an exhibit or two before laying dormant for these past decades.
